Learning the trade

During the Second World War, Terence’s father, William Ball started his service in the Medical Corps as a stretcher-bearer. Like many others, he was injured at Dunkirk and was subsequently re-enrolled into the Royal Engineers on his return to Britain, where he learned his trade as a master carpenter.

Mastering his skills

Following the end of the war, William continued mastering his skills as a master carpenter and when his son Terence left school, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and train as a carpenter.

Joining forces

Terence Ball started his career in the furniture industry at the tender age of 16, joining forces with his father William in a business venture designing, building, and selling quality home furniture to local families at prices they could afford. Terence and William understood how many families across London were still feeling the pains from the war, having lost cherished heirlooms and much of their furniture during the Blitz.

On to Petticoat Lane

The father-son team embarked on making beautifully handcrafted furniture accompanied with an impeccable attention to detail. They would regularly take their lovingly crafted creations to Petticoat Lane Market to sell to the community. It didn’t take long for the Ball name to be associated with high-quality, beautifully crafted furniture that was also reliable and importantly, affordable.

Families who eat together, stay together…

During the years that followed, Terence and William received regular requests for their craftsmen skills and were repeatedly asked to work on other people’s home projects. It was during this time that Terence realised his passion for crafting and designing bespoke kitchens, because for Terence, there was no more important room in a home than the kitchen. His Mother had always been known to say: – ‘family and friends who eat together, stay together’.
